ERC, WAEC move to integrate computer-based testing for exams

The FCT Education Resource Centre, ERC, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has commenced sensitization of principals and examination officers ahead of the planned migration from paper-and-pen examinations to the Computer-Based Test, CBT, system in line with the Federal Government’s directive.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ briefing at Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse, the Director of ERC, Dr Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, reaffirmed the Centre’s readiness to implement all government-approved academic reforms, including those under the new curriculum.

She said the introduction of the new curriculum and CBT system would be implemented with full stakeholder understanding, urging school managers to embrace the transition.

According to her, the ERC has been promoting entrepreneurship and skills acquisition long before the new framework was introduced and will sustain that momentum through teacher capacity-building.

Abdulrahim, commended WAEC for initiating the sensitization exercise, describing it as a timely move to ensure a smooth transition. She stressed the need for proper registration, timely uploading of candidates’ details, and stronger communication channels to prevent disruptions during the process.

She also called on schools to cooperate fully with ERC’s external examination monitoring teams and support the FCT Education Secretariat’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice.

In his remarks, the WAEC FCT Zonal Coordinator, Mr Kelezo Ambrose, said the exercise was designed to prepare principals and examination officers for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examinations, SSCE, which will be conducted using CBT.

He noted that WAEC had developed a feedback mechanism to promptly address emerging concerns during the transition.

Ambrose added that existing school-based and commercial CBT centres would be leveraged to ensure seamless implementation.

He assured that no student or school would be left behind as WAEC embraces technology to enhance efficiency and credibility in its examinations.

Participants at the briefing expressed readiness to support the CBT integration but called for continuous training and capacity building for teachers and examination officers.

In a related development, Dr Abdulrahim led an ERC delegation to the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to fine-tune strategies for implementing the new curriculum.

The NERDC Executive Secretary, Prof. Salisu Shehu, commended ERC’s proactive efforts and pledged continued collaboration to ensure effective rollout across schools in the FCT.
