A physician in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, has been released after spending nearly three weeks in captivity.
The Nigerian Medical Association, FCT branch NMA-FCT, confirmed her safe recovery.
The Ukraine-trained doctor was abducted on October 21 while traveling to Garki Hospital in Abuja. Her disappearance sparked concern across the medical community, as well as among family and colleagues.
In a statement on Monday, NMA-FCT Chairman Dr. Emeka Ayogu said Nwachukwu was located in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja on Sunday night.
“After almost three weeks in captivity, Dr. Nwachukwu has been safely rescued. She is receiving appropriate medical care and will soon be reunited with her family,” Dr. Ayogu said.
He also expressed gratitude to security agencies and stakeholders who contributed to the successful rescue, describing the development as a shared victory for the medical community and NMA-FCT.
