Naval chief attends maritime defence conference in Qatar

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has attended the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference 2026 (DIMDEX) held in Qatar.

In a statement by the Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, the event took place from January 19 to 22 and was hosted by the Qatar Armed Forces under the patronage of the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The statement said the conference provided an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its maritime security capacity and engage with global partners on modern defence technology.

It added that the naval chief interacted with several solution providers on shipbuilding, technology transfer and the development of indigenous naval platforms.

According to the Navy, Nigeria has already built several sea-going platforms locally, including NNS Andoni, NNS Karaduwa, MV Tug Commander Ugwu, and NNS Oji, noting that the engagements could further position the country as a shipbuilding hub in Africa.

The statement said the Navy also previewed precision-guided weapons, naval gunfire support systems and maritime security solutions for operations in Nigerian waters and the Gulf of Guinea.

It added that the engagement aligns with the Navy’s vision of building a modern, agile and professional force capable of securing Nigeria’s maritime interests and supporting national security objectives.
