Gridlock hits Abuja airport as 10,000 register for cashless toll

No fewer than 10,000 “Go Cashless” cards have been registered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, following the full implementation of the Federal Government’s cashless toll policy.

The Airport Manager, Mr Ahmed Danjuma, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.

He explained that the temporary gridlock experienced on Monday and in the early hours of Tuesday at the airport toll gate resulted from the enforcement of the cashless policy.

According to Danjuma, although registration for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria cards commenced in August 2025, many airport users failed to comply ahead of the March 1 enforcement deadline despite repeated sensitisation.

“Since March 1, we went cashless in line with the policy of this government to eliminate the collection of cash at toll gates. The move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and revenue optimisation,” he said.

He added that airport users who attempt to pay cash at FAAN toll gates would be denied access.

“We have been announcing it before now for airport users to get their FAAN cards so that when you get to the gate, you just tap and the barrier opens.

“Now, if you go to any FAAN gate and you want to pay cash, you will be disappointed because nobody will allow you to pass through,” he stated.

Some airport users who spoke with NAN commended the initiative, describing it as a step towards improving service delivery and boosting revenue generation in the aviation sector.

They noted that the reform could reposition Nigeria’s aviation industry for growth and global competitiveness but urged the government to ensure that funds generated are channelled into infrastructural development at airports nationwide.

The Federal Government had announced the cashless toll policy as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen accountability and block revenue leakages across federal facilities.
