US Embassy alerts Americans of possible Iran‑related protests in Abuja

By Sarah NEGEDU
The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a high-level security alert to its citizens in the Federal Capital Territory, warning of a “high potential” for demonstrations on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
The advisory comes amid escalating tensions following the direct military conflict between the U.S. and Iran, and cautions that protests in Abuja could turn violent.
The Embassy specifically urged Americans to remain indoors throughout the day and keep a “low profile,” while closely monitoring local media for developments.
The security advisory states, “The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4.”
They noted that previous demonstrations in the capital have occasionally escalated into clashes with Nigerian security forces, and said the ongoing Middle East crisis could spark rapid unrest even during routine gatherings.
While consular services in Abuja and Lagos remain operational, the Embassy advised citizens to vary travel routes and times, maintain situational awareness in public spaces such as shopping centres, cinemas, and places of worship, keep mobile devices charged, carry proper identification, and review personal security plans, including identifying emergency exits when entering public buildings.
The alert follows a week of heightened tension in the capital, with Nigerian authorities reportedly reinforcing security around Diplomatic Drive and the Central District Area in anticipation of organized demonstrations.
The U.S. State Department also encouraged travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive immediate updates as the situation evolves.
