FCTA doctor beats 18 countries to win top medical prize

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has reaffirmed its growing reputation in medical excellence as one of its doctors, Dr Yibala Akpama Edimek, emerged the overall best candidate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the 65th Annual Scientific Conference of the West African College of Surgeons held in Bamako, Mali.

Edimek competed with candidates from 18 West African countries and clinched two major prizes at the conference – the Prof. Bello Osaigie Prize for Overall Best Candidate and the Prof. Oladipo Alabi Ladipo Prize for Best Female Candidate.

Her achievement has been described as a major milestone for the FCTA health sector and Nigeria’s medical community.

Speaking on the development, the former Director-General of the FCT Hospital Management Board, Dr Olugbenga Bello, had earlier presented Edimek to the Mandate Secretary and the management team of the Health Services Secretariat at the Emergency Operations Centre Conference Room in February 2025.

Bello described her as a shining star who had brought honour and distinction to the Federal Capital Territory through hard work, discipline and professional excellence.

The Mandate Secretary commended the doctor’s outstanding performance, attributing the success to the dedication and mentorship of FCTA consultants and trainers who continue to produce globally competitive specialists.

She also recognised the contributions of the consultants who trained Edimek and presented both the doctor and her trainers with an undisclosed cash reward in appreciation of their commitment to excellence.

The Mandate Secretary further commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for providing an enabling environment that supports professional development in the territory’s health sector.

In fulfilment of an earlier pledge, the member representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Joshua Chinedu Obika, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, presented Edimek with a cash gift at the Mandate Secretary’s office in recognition of her exceptional achievement.

The recognition, stakeholders say, further strengthens the FCTA’s commitment to raising the standard of healthcare delivery and residency training in the Federal Capital Territory.
