A heavy rainstorm on Tuesday afternoon, ripped off parts of the newly built Bus Terminal in Kugbo, causing major traffic congestion along the Abuja-Keffi highway.
The downpour, which began around 3:30 p.m., blew off the terminal’s roof and scattered debris across both lanes of the dual carriageway, bringing vehicular movement to a near standstill.
Motorists struggled to navigate the debris, while scavengers braved the rain to cart away roofing materials and other displaced items.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal is one of the three terminals flagged off in early 2025 and officially commissioned later that year, as part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s initiative to modernize public transport infrastructure, ease traffic congestion, and provide safe boarding points for commuters along key urban routes.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as frustrated motorists sought alternate routes to escape the logjam. “The road was completely blocked. People were trying to move vehicles around the debris while some were just stuck. It was total chaos,” one commuter said.
The Senior Special Assistant, Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, said the windstorm also caused minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and some nearby buildings.
Olayinka, in a statement, added that preliminary reports confirmed no injuries or vehicle damage. He added that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has directed security personnel to be deployed to the site to prevent breakdown of law and order and ensure free flow of traffic, while immediate action will be taken to fix the damages.
The incident has reignited concerns about the vulnerability of newly completed public infrastructure to extreme weather, even as the FCTA assures residents that repairs will be expedited.
