NRS, JRB introduce unified tax ID for Nigerians

The Nigeria Revenue Service, NRS, and the Joint Revenue Board, JRB, have announced the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification system with the aim to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency, and enhance service delivery across Nigeria’s tax system.

The management of both agencies, in a public notice issued in Abuja, said the initiative was in line with Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable person in the country to obtain a Tax ID.

NRS and JRB said the new system “forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve service delivery across the nation’s tax system.”

According to the notice, the Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.

The agencies explained that the system was designed to “consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information.”

Speaking on the benefits of the initiative, the agencies said the Tax ID would provide a single tax identity for all tax transactions and engagements.

They also noted that tax ID will simplify compliance processes such as registration, filing and payment of taxes, and improve transparency through better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records.

The agencies added that the new framework would also enhance revenue assurance by reducing tax leakages and improving accountability, while ensuring harmonisation of taxpayer information across all tiers of government.

The notice further stated that all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions, and organisations currently using the TIN Validation API would now migrate to the new Tax ID system, which would replace the existing platform.

The agencies advised organisations requiring integration or validation services related to Tax ID for individuals, enterprises and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB, while corporate entities seeking integration services were directed to the Tax Automation Department of the NRS.

“The new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API,” the management stated in the notice.
