The Young Progressives Party, YPP, has clarified that its former 2027 presidential candidate, Mrs. Anita Zugwai Chukwu, voluntarily withdrew from the presidential race over concerns about the prevailing security situation in parts of the country.
The party said Chukwu, who was unanimously nominated at its 3rd Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary held on May 30, 2026, formally communicated her decision to the party leadership in a letter dated August 12.
According to the YPP, her decision followed consultations with family members, who expressed concerns about the extensive movements, travels and public exposure that would accompany the 2027 campaign.
The party dismissed reports suggesting that she was pressured or coerced into withdrawing, insisting that her decision was freely and voluntarily taken.
Following her withdrawal, the YPP said it explored options to replace her with another suitably qualified female aspirant but was unsuccessful.
The party consequently held a Special Presidential Substitution Primary on August 21, where Dr. Peter Agada emerged as its preferred presidential candidate after being affirmed by party members.
The YPP maintained that Agada’s emergence does not diminish Chukwu’s contributions to the party, describing her as a committed member of its progressive movement.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity, saying it does not discriminate on the basis of gender, age, disability or other status.
It urged the public and the media to disregard what it described as unfounded rumours surrounding Chukwu’s withdrawal, while reaffirming its readiness to present credible and competent leadership to Nigerians in the 2027 general election.
