The FCT Police Command has handed over recovered illicit drugs and arrested suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
The handover, which took place on Friday, followed the recovery of the illicit drugs and substances by the police as part of ongoing efforts to tackle drug-related crimes and other criminal activities in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, saying the handover was carried out in furtherance of existing inter-agency collaboration between the police and other security and law enforcement agencies in the FCT.
She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, handed over the recovered items and suspects to the NDLEA-FCT Command, stressing the importance of maintaining synergy with sister agencies.
Speaking during the handover, Sanusi said, “while nothing precludes the Command from investigating and prosecuting drug-related offences, the Command considers it necessary to maintain strong synergy and collaboration with sister security and law enforcement agencies within the FCT, particularly the NDLEA, whose statutory mandate includes the investigation and prosecution of drug-related offences.”
Receiving the items and suspects on behalf of the NDLEA FCT Strategic Command, its Public Relations Officer, ACN Samuel Orji, expressed appreciation to the police commissioner for extending inter-agency cooperation through the handover.
Orji assured that the suspects would be subjected to proper investigation and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.
The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to strengthening collaboration with sister security agencies and other stakeholders in efforts to safeguard the Federal Capital Territory.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
