The FCT Police Command has ordered an investigation into an allegation that a police officer demanded N450,000 from a complainant for “mobilisation and petition” in connection with a matter brought before the command for investigation.
The allegation was made in a video circulating on social media by a content creator identified as Tumma Gabriel, who claimed that he was asked to provide the money while attempting to bring a matter before the Criminal Investigation Department of the FCT Police Command.
The command said it “strongly condemns such acts” and does not encourage its officers to solicit or demand any form of remuneration before, during, or after investigations.
In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had ordered a “thorough investigation into the allegations” to identify any officer who may be involved.
The command said, “Any person found liable will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations.”
The command also called on Gabriel to contact the command or visit the command headquarters to assist the investigation by providing relevant information that could help identify the officer or officers involved.
The police said the complainant’s cooperation would assist the investigation into the allegation and help the command establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged demand.
