Maguire’s late header condemns EPL Champions Liverpool to fourth defeat

Manchester United left Anfield cheering after Harry Maguire’s header in the 84th minute secured a 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

Maguire’s goal denied Liverpool a Premier League draw despite a second-half revival led by Cody Gakpo.

United stunned Liverpool inside two minutes when Bryan Mbeumo ran onto a through ball and finished past Giorgi Mamardashvili to give the visitors a shock lead.

That early blow left Liverpool chasing the game for long periods.

Their attacks on the United goal hit the woodwork repeatedly, and saw chance after chance spurned.

Cody Gakpo struck the post several times in the first half and, after a sustained spell of pressure, finally forced parity in the 78th minute when Federico Chiesa’s cross found him at close range to make it 1-1.

Just six minutes later, United’s Bruno Fernandes produced an inch-perfect volleyed delivery and Harry Maguire rose to glance the ball across the goal and into the net, with Mamardashvili frozen on the line.

Barcelona reveal €17m net loss for 2024–25 season

Barcelona have posted a €17 million net loss for the 2024–25 season despite generating €994 million in revenue.

This was disclosed at the club’s Ordinary General Assembly on Sunday, monitored by Marca and cited by PUNCH Online.

Addressing members in what appears to be his final appearance, the Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, said the accounts initially showed a surplus before additional charges turned the figure into a high loss.

“Barcelona’s initial financial accounts depict a €2m surplus, before additional fees resulted in a €17m net loss overall,” he revealed.

He stressed that the financial picture is nevertheless improving and stressed the club’s progress on and off the pitch.

“In the economic realm, we have done everything so that you can continue being the owners of the club, the members, without having to bear the cost, without having to dig into your pockets. We are very satisfied with that,” said Laporta.

“Positive results with a surplus of 2 million euros…achieving revenues of €994m, you will agree, is even more remarkable considering that we are still playing away from home.

“We have achieved a historic record in sponsorship with a total of €259m, which is explained by the internationalisation of the market.

“We have reduced the debt set by the League by €90m, which is no small feat. So we are on the right track. We have made a titanic effort to contain spending.”

On the sporting side, Laporta underlined last season’s successes as evidence of the club’s recovery, praising the coaching staff and La Masía while pointing to the ongoing Spotify Camp Nou rebuild as a long-term boost.

“We feel stronger than ever to complete Barça’s recovery in every area,” he added, reflecting on a season that produced major silverware and renewed optimism.

The assembly also approved the club’s financial statements and set out the budgetary plans for 2025–26, which will seek to build on commercial momentum while continuing debt reduction and stadium redevelopment efforts.

The figures signal a slight downturn from 2023-24, when both Barca’s income and expenditure were under €900m and they recorded a marginal net profit of £4.3m ($5.8m) overall.

Villa fight back to beat Spurs away

A superb individual goal from Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia’s late winner helped Aston Villa to a comeback win over Tottenham, who missed the chance to go second in the Premier League.

Substitute Buendia proved to be the match-winner when he cut inside to shoot into the bottom corner in the 77th minute with boss Unai Emery bouncing in celebration on the touchline.

Villa’s win, only their third in the league this season but fifth on the trot in all competitions, looked a long way off when the hosts took a fifth-minute lead thanks to Rodrigo Bentancur’s first club goal in 2025.

It came from Mohammed Kudus’ cross from deep on the left as Joao Palhinha headed the ball back into the danger zone and Bentancur was able to blast home the loose ball on the half volley from eight yards out.

But in an entertaining clash played in heavy rain, Rogers also got his first club goal of the season – and first since April – in some style.

The England midfielder found the space, despite four home players being in close attendance, to fire a sublime looping 20-yard strike which went over home goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and dipped under the crossbar.

Both sides thought they should have had a penalty in the second half.

Tottenham defender Kevin Danso – a late replacement for Cristian Romero after the Spurs captain was injured in the warm-up – slid in and caught Lucas Digne on the ankle with his follow-through, but was not penalised.

The hosts also appealed after the ball hit Villa defender Ezri Konsa’s arms, which were raised over his chest, but on both occasions the referee was not interested.

But, just when the game appeared to be heading towards a tame finale, Matty Cash played a superb cross-field ball from defence to find Digne and he set up Buendia to fire home his third goal in four games.
