Tinubu sends envoys to UK on Ekweremadu’s prison transfer

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a delegation to the United Kingdom to discuss the possible transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to a Nigerian prison.

The delegation, according to sources close to the Presidency, will engage British authorities to explore the legal and diplomatic requirements for Ekweremadu’s transfer.

Ekweremadu was convicted by a UK court for his involvement in a child trafficking case, a development that has attracted widespread attention both locally and internationally.

A senior government official said, “The President is committed to ensuring that all Nigerian citizens abroad are accorded the rights and considerations due under international law. The delegation’s mission is to see if arrangements can be made to allow Ekweremadu to serve his sentence in Nigeria.”

Efforts to reach the UK Embassy in Nigeria for comment were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The former lawmaker’s legal team is yet to comment on the development.
