Otti signs law to establish rehabilitation centre for rape, GBV survivors

The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has signed into law a bill establishing a rehabilitation centre for survivors of rape and gender-based violence (GBV).

The new law provides for the creation of a dedicated facility aimed at offering psychosocial support, medical care, and reintegration services for survivors across the state.

Speaking during the signing, Otti said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and strengthening institutional response to GBV.

He noted that beyond providing immediate care, the centre will focus on long-term recovery, including counselling, legal support, and empowerment programmes for survivors.

The governor also stressed the need for stronger collaboration among relevant agencies, civil society organisations, and communities to tackle the rising cases of gender-based violence.

Stakeholders have described the development as a step toward improving access to support services for survivors and addressing gaps in response systems.

The law is expected to enhance coordination in handling GBV cases and ensure survivors receive comprehensive care in a safe and supportive environment.
