The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has led a Nigerian delegation to the Republic of Korea to participate in the International Election Observation Programme, IEOP, organised alongside the country’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections.
According to the INEC Daily Bulletin, the programme, organised by South Korea’s National Election Commission, NEC, commenced on May 30 in Seoul and will run until June 5, 2026.
The event has brought together election management bodies, electoral experts and international observers from different parts of the world to observe and share experiences on the conduct of local government elections.
The INEC Chairman was accompanied by National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; the Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and the Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.
As part of the observation programme, the Nigerian delegation visited a polling centre in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where they observed early voting activities and gained firsthand knowledge of South Korea’s electoral processes and operational procedures.
The Commission said the engagement would provide valuable opportunities for learning and exchanging ideas on election administration, electoral governance and international election observation.
INEC noted that participation in the programme aligns with its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria by adopting emerging global trends and best practices in election management.
The programme is expected to enhance the Commission’s capacity in electoral administration and contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at improving the credibility, transparency and efficiency of Nigeria’s electoral system.
