The FCT Police Command has ordered a strict enforcement of traffic laws across the Federal Capital Territory, with motorists driving against traffic and other offenders to face arrest and prosecution.
The directive was issued on Sunday by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, who also ordered intensified patrols around major roads, traffic-congested areas, junctions and stop signs to curb traffic-related crimes.
Sanusi specifically directed Divisional Police Officers and MOTOPOL personnel to clamp down on motorists driving against traffic, popularly known as “one-way”, as part of measures to improve road safety and ensure free flow of traffic.
The commissioner, in a statement, also ordered officers to arrest and prosecute traffic robbers who take advantage of traffic congestion and stops to dispossess unsuspecting motorists and other road users of their valuables.
The statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson of the Command, SP Josephine Adeh, charged personnel to carry out the enforcement with professionalism, civility and strict adherence to the rule of law.
Sanusi, however, warned police officers against turning the exercise into an avenue for extortion, harassment, intimidation or unlawful use of force, stressing that officers found violating the rights of members of the public would face disciplinary action.
The Command urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic signs, avoid reckless driving and refrain from other traffic violations.
