Arewa group backs Tinubu’s re-election over Kano irrigation projects

The Arewa Revival Project has declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing the Federal Government’s ecological interventions in the Kano River Irrigation Scheme as evidence of the administration’s commitment to agricultural development and food security.

The group, in a press statement signed by its Project Coordinator, Hon. Muttaka Ahmed Ibrahim, commended the rehabilitation and expansion projects at Tiga Dam, Challawa Gorge Dam and Kafin Chiri Dam in Kano State.

It described the projects, being implemented through the Ecological Project Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, as strategic investments capable of boosting agricultural production, creating jobs and improving rural livelihoods.

According to the group, the intervention at Tiga Dam is designed to open new irrigation sectors in Yakasai, Gwamma and Gurjiya, covering approximately 875 hectares.

It added that the project at Challawa Gorge Dam focuses on developing 240 hectares of irrigable land, while the intervention at Kafin Chiri Dam is expected to open additional irrigation sectors covering about 164.91 hectares.

The group said the projects would improve access to irrigation water, support year-round farming and strengthen the resilience of farming communities against climate-related challenges.

It also noted that improved irrigation infrastructure could unlock Kano State’s agricultural potential, encourage private investment in agribusiness and strengthen food supply chains.

The statement said the projects aligned with the objectives of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in food security, economic diversification, poverty reduction and inclusive development.

However, the group stressed that the long-term benefits of the interventions would depend on timely completion, effective maintenance, transparent implementation and the active participation of beneficiary communities.

It called on relevant government agencies, local stakeholders and farming communities to support the projects to ensure that the infrastructure delivers its intended benefits.

Explaining its endorsement of Tinubu’s re-election bid, the group said continuity in leadership would provide an opportunity to consolidate ongoing projects, expand development initiatives and sustain efforts towards national economic transformation.

It also advocated a comprehensive approach to ecological remediation that combines infrastructure development with biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, community engagement and livelihood support.

The group maintained that the success of the Kano River Irrigation Special Ecological Project should be measured not only by the infrastructure delivered but also by its impact on farmers, rural households and the wider economy.
