Urban flooding a major threat in Abuja- FEMA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration said it will be embarking on a joint assessment of flood prone areas and estates in the territory to mitigate the impact of floods, as the FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, has noted that urban flooding is now a major threat in the territory.

The Director General of FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss, said the all identified infractions would be removed no matter how big the structure may be as government will not fold its arms and watch people put the lives of others at risk.

Idriss in a chat with newsmen in Abuja, said flooding in the Lokogoma area has serious reduced due to the proactive measures taken by the Administration.

“Seasonal flooding in Lokogoma has reduced in the past three years, because we removed obstructions to the flow of water. People went and built on the water ways, those structures will be pulled down,” he said.

He said the assessment tour would involve key stakeholders including the Department of Development Control, Engineering Services Department and Estate Developers.

The FEMA boss who also described this week’s flash flood witnessed in some parts of the territory as a wake-up call, appealed to residents to adhere to the master plan and approved building codes.
