NDLEA decries high drug use in Benue, arrest 211 suspects in one year

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has decried the high rate of illicit drug abuse in Benue state saying a total of 1,533.929kg was seized between June 2021 and June 2022.

The State Commander NDLEA, Benue state Command, Mrs Esther Musa, disclosed this while briefing journalists in commemoration of the 2022 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, in Makurdi, on Tuesday.

In a breakdown, the state NDLEA boss said the command seized 1,150.98kg of cannabis sativa; in 11 hectares farm, 382.949 psychotropic substances including 94.33 grams of cocaine, 64.47 grams of amphetamine as well as four locally made G3 riffles and 95 rounds of 7.62 ammunition.

She also disclosed that 211 suspects; 191 males and 20 females, were arrested for illicit drug trafficking offences within the period under review.

According to her, while 53 suspects have been convicted with suspects serving various jail terms, 59 drug addicts were rehabilitated and discharged by the command with 14 others still in custody and currently undergoing counseling.

Mrs Musa who noted that the rising use of illicit drugs was partly fueling the current crisis of insecurity; banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, in the country, said all hands must be on deck to fight the monster of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the agency in its drug war, she expressed the commitment of the command in sensitizing the public, especially the youths, on dangers associated with cultivation, manufacture, trafficking, use and abuse of illicit drugs, just as she described this year’s theme, “Addressing Drug Challenges in Health and Humanitarian Crisis,” as apt.
