Kogi plans economic zone with China

Kogi State is set to launch the Kogi Hunan Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in partnership with China to boost industrial growth and investment.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has announced the development of the SEZ, which will operate as a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Ajaokuta. The project, backed by the Hunan provincial government of China, aims to attract foreign investments and create job opportunities.

“The Kogi Hunan Free Trade Zone is a strategic partnership that embodies the shared aspirations of our two nations,” said Yan Yuqing, Consul General of China, during a visit to Lokoja.

The economic zone will cover 3,000 hectares and is expected to enhance industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and energy. It will also benefit from existing infrastructure, including the Warri-Itakpe-Ajaokuta rail line and ongoing gas projects.

Governor Ododo emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “We are committed to making the Kogi Hunan Special Economic Zone a model of industrial and economic transformation.”

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to boost economic growth through free trade zones, similar to those in Lagos, Ogun, and Kano. Experts believe the SEZ will stimulate local businesses and improve living standards across the North-Central region.
