 Over 17,600 Nigerian Students Secure U.S. Admissions in 2023 – U.S. Envoy

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., has revealed that over 17,600 Nigerian students gained admission into U.S. educational institutions in 2023, making Nigeria the African country with the highest number of students studying in the United States.

Speaking at the 23rd Annual College Fair in Abuja on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, Mills highlighted that these students were enrolled in over 970 institutions across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with Texas emerging as the most popular destination for Nigerian students.

The Ambassador attributed the surge in Nigerian student applications to the Embassy-sponsored College Fairs, which have significantly increased opportunities for students, including access to scholarships and financial aid.

“Your presence here represents the strong people-to-people ties between the United States and Nigeria,” said Mills. “More Nigerians study in the United States than from any other African country. Our annual College Fairs have played a vital role in boosting the number of excellent applicants to U.S. institutions.”

Mills further emphasized that quality education is essential for Nigeria’s equitable economic growth, improved health indicators, gender equality, and overall socioeconomic progress. He added that the United States remains committed to its educational partnership with Nigeria, noting that studying in the U.S. fosters lifelong friendships and mutual benefits for both nations.

The College Fair, organized by the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with various educational institutions, serves as a platform for prospective Nigerian students to engage with U.S. universities and obtain current information on academic programs and career possibilities in the United States.
