The Albinism Association of Nigeria, AAN, has raised alarm over the growing number of its members battling skin cancer, revealing that over 40 individuals are currently affected, with many requiring urgent medical interventions.
In its New Year message signed by the National President, Dr. Mrs. Bisi Bamishe, the association disclosed that in 2024 alone, 16 members succumbed to the disease due to a lack of timely and adequate treatment.
The association warned that without immediate support, the situation could worsen, leading to more preventable deaths.
“Presently, not less than 40 of our members are down with various stages of skin cancer. Some need to undergo surgery, some chemotherapy, and some radiotherapy. We need help urgently,” Dr. Bamishe stated.
The association further highlighted the critical need for preventive measures and treatment, urging the government, development partners, and philanthropists to step in. It called for the provision of essential protection items such as sunscreen, UV umbrellas, hats, and protective clothing to reduce the risk of skin cancer among persons with albinism.
Additionally, the association emphasized the need for free or subsidized medical care, noting that many members cannot afford the high cost of surgeries and therapies.
Bamishe expressed gratitude to organizations and individuals who supported the albinism community in 2024, including the Disability Rights Fund, DRF, and the Lagos State Government, but stressed the need for sustained and increased assistance.
“As we celebrate this new beginning, it is with a heavy heart that we bring to your attention the plight of some of our members who are enduring immense pain in hospitals or confined to their homes,” she added.
The AAN also advocated for public awareness campaigns in schools, markets, and worship places to educate Nigerians about the challenges faced by persons with albinism and to reduce stigma and discrimination.
Bamishe concluded the message by urging all stakeholders to rise to the occasion, stated, “Let us rise to save lives. Together, we can turn the tide and create a future where every individual, regardless of their color or condition, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
