FRSC seeks TETFund support for training institutions to boost road safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC has appealed to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, for support in developing its training institutions to enhance the capacity and professionalism of road safety personnel nationwide.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made the request during a courtesy visit to TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mohammed commended TETFund’s contributions to tertiary education through its intervention projects and emphasized the need for collaboration to reduce road traffic crashes and achieve a zero-casualty rate.

“We have academic institutions that were designated in 2023 by an Act to be self-funded outside the FRSC budget. However, we are currently unable to access funding for these institutions,” he said.

“This visit is an opportunity to appreciate TETFund and explore areas of collaboration, particularly in infrastructure and funding, to strengthen road safety education and training. With the right support, we can significantly reduce road crashes and ensure safer mobility for Nigerians,” Mohammed added.

He further highlighted FRSC’s ambitious goal of reducing road crashes by 50% while striving for zero fatalities, stressing that technology, research, and continuous training of personnel are critical to achieving this target.

On his part, Echono backed collaboration on road safety and expressed TETFund’s readiness to partner with the FRSC, particularly in awareness creation and training initiatives aimed at improving road safety beyond tertiary institutions.

The TETFund boss commended the FRSC’s digital transformation efforts, noting that technology has played a key role in reducing accidents and improving road safety management.

“By embracing technology, FRSC has enhanced its operations and increased visibility in the critical work it does. It is widely acknowledged that road traffic accidents and related fatalities have significantly declined,” Echono said.

He assured that TETFund is committed to working with relevant agencies to drive national development and would explore partnership opportunities with the FRSC in areas such as research and institutional support.

“FRSC can leverage TETFund’s platform to expand its road safety awareness programs to millions of Nigerian students. We are also open to supporting the corps’ training institutions that meet the necessary certifications,” he added.
