Nigerian Professor’s AI safety system ranks 2nd in global contest

Nigerian Professor, Abdulkadir Baba Hassan’s groundbreaking innovation, Intelligent Wheel Safety System, IWSS: AI-Enhanced Tire Safety and Sustainability with Wheel Airbag Technology, has secured the second spot among the Top Ten Most Popular Entries in the prestigious Create the Future Design contest, according to the competition’s latest update.

Hassan, a professor of automobile engineering and Director of the Academic Planning Unit at the University of Abuja, is the only African to make the top ten, earning 235 votes in the global contest.

The Create the Future Design Contest, launched in 2002 by Tech Brief magazine and backed by U.S.-based sponsors, honors cutting-edge engineering innovations.

The 2024 edition attracted 422 product design entries from engineers, entrepreneurs, and students worldwide across various categories.

Hassan’s innovation in the Automotive/Transportation category is poised to transform road safety in Nigeria by addressing tire-related accidents and enhancing overall driving security.

Expressing his excitement over the recognition, Hassan stated:
“The IWSS not only tackles immediate road safety concerns in Nigeria but also aligns with sustainable development goals. By reducing accidents, minimizing environmental impact, and fostering innovation in the automotive sector, this technology paves the way for a safer and more resilient transportation infrastructure—both locally and globally.”

His achievement highlights Africa’s growing influence in global engineering and innovation, setting a precedent for future advancements in automotive safety.
