BoT urges unity as PDP moves to end internal crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is seeking to stabilise the party as the Board of Trustees and the National Caretaker Committee called for unity, discipline and compliance with recent court rulings ahead of its long-delayed congresses.

Meeting at its 85th session in Abuja on Monday, the BoT said the PDP had reached a crucial moment after months of leadership disputes and legal battles.

It therefore urged senior stakeholders to place the party’s collective interest above personal ambitions as preparations begin for internal restructuring.

Factional BoT Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said the turbulence of recent months had tested the PDP’s institutions but not weakened its foundations, noting that the delay in conducting congresses was a deliberate step taken in deference to ongoing court cases.

“The PDP chose legality over expediency and patience over provocation,” he said.

He welcomed the Federal High Court judgment delivered in Ibadan, which affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee, and asked party members to respect judicial outcomes for the sake of internal stability.

“With the legal fog lifting, the focus must now shift to reconciliation, rebuilding trust and laying the groundwork for orderly congresses and a credible national convention,” he said.

In his remarks, the factional National Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, thanked the BoT for what he described as unwavering support during the party’s most challenging period in years.

He also acknowledged the support of the FCT Minister, saying it had strengthened the committee’s resolve to reposition the PDP.

“Any moment from now, we shall roll out a timetable for activities relating to outstanding congresses in some states, which will usher in a seamless national convention,” he said.

Mohammed said the recent court judgment had provided much-needed clarity on the party’s leadership question, adding that the Caretaker Committee remained fully mandated to stabilise the PDP and guide it through its next phase.

He called on members nationwide to remain committed, warning that the party “cannot afford to sleep in our hands.”

Both leaders expressed optimism that ongoing reconciliation efforts, sustained stakeholder engagement and the forthcoming congress processes would help restore coherence, discipline and competitiveness within the PDP.
