The Nigeria Police Force is set to quiz Senator Sunday Karimi representing Kogi West Senatorial District, for questioning over a report that he alleged that Russia’s KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), the former Soviet security agency, has infiltrated the National Assembly.
The date with the police slated for Monday, March 24, 2025 is predicated on a petition by embattled Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Senator Karimi allegedly shared a report titled “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy” on the official WhatsApp group of the 10th Senate on February 23, 2025.
In her petition, dated March 5, 2025, Akpoti-Uduaghan raised serious concerns over the claims, warning that such an alarming allegation threatens national security and demands immediate investigation.
According to the petition, Senator Karimi shared the report in the Senate’s WhatsApp group at 4:08 AM Singapore time (8:08 PM Nigerian time) on February 23, 2025, while Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was in Singapore.
The suspended senator underscored the urgency of the matter, stating, “No nation can afford to ignore the presence of such a group within its legislative body.”
In light of the gravity of the allegations, the petition calls for swift action. Senator Karimi is expected to cooperate with the investigation and provide details about the report’s origin and sources.
Meanwhile, Senator Karimi has been summoned for questioning at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on March 24, 2025.
The invitation letter, dated March 17, 2025, was signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit.
With Reference No: CR:3000/IGP.SEC/MU/OPS.T1/ABJ/VOL.115/281, the letter is titled: “Re: Petition for the investigation of a publication titled ‘KGB Agent group warns Senate: A call for vigilance amidst threats to democracy.’”
The letter reads in part: “This office is investigating the above-mentioned case reported to the Inspector General of Police, in which your name featured prominently. You are kindly requested to interview the undersigned through CSP. Sunny Amison on 24th March, 2025, to shed more light on the allegations.”
On Sunday, both Kogi senators were engaged in war of words as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to conduct periodic drug tests on senators.
This comes after Karimi criticised Natasha’s behaviour, describing recent events in the Senate as a “total mess and an embarrassment.”
Karimi had described the recent happenings in the Senate as “total mess and an embarrassment brought to the entire state,” adding that “all our admonition to her fell on deaf ears. One can therefore come to terms with the fact that former Governor Yahaya Bello saw it coming.
“Senator Natasha has not only rubbished the perception of the state, from the events happening now in Nigeria, she has also embarrassed the entire country,” he claimed.
Reacting, Senator Natasha in a statement on Sunday, said NDLEA needs to conduct periodic tests on senators to avoid erratic legislative hallucinations.
“NDLEA needs to conduct periodic tests on senators. That singular process will save the parliament from erratic legislative hallucinations,” she opined.
