CBN commits to gender equality, as more women lead financial institutions

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive leadership, stating that more women than ever are now at the helm of financial institutions as Managing Directors, MDs.

CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the Grand Finale of the International Women’s Day Awards, organized by the apex bank.

Cardoso said the theme of the 2025 International Women’s Day: “Inspiring Change, Leading with Purpose, and Creating Impact,” reaffirms the bank’s commitment to gender equality.

“Together, we accelerate action for a future where women thrive! Advancing gender equality is not just a moral imperative; it’s an economic necessity,” Cardoso said.

He noted the transformation within Nigeria’s banking sector, stating that women now make up 35 per cent of newly appointed directors and three of the seven non-executive board members at CBN, a testament to the apex bank’s commitment to fostering inclusive leadership.

Cardoso further reiterated the CBN’s dedication to breaking barriers for women through leadership programmes, mentorship initiatives, and policies promoting work-life balance.

“Diversity drives innovation, and we will continue to champion women’s growth in the workplace,” he added.

Also peaking, CBN Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, Emem Usoro, urged women to take charge of their careers and reject societal limitations, calling on all to commit to ensuring that every woman at the bank and across the nation has the opportunity to rise, lead, and thrive.

“Refuse to play into stereotypes! Desist from making excuses because you are a woman. Be bold, be strong, and always seek to make a meaningful impact,” she charged.

As part of the celebration, CBN honoured exceptional women with awards, recognizing their contributions and leadership across the financial sector.
