FG deregisters youth council, cites prolonged leadership crisis

The Federal Government has announced the deregistration of the National Youth Council of, Nigeria, NYCN, following a leadership crisis that has lasted nearly two decades.

In a statement on Monday, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Omolara Esan, outlined the Corporate Affairs Commission’s, CAC, action regarding the council.

The CAC acted under Sections 8(1)(c) and 8(1)(d) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, following a detailed investigation into the council’s activities. The review revealed “serial violations” of both the NYCN Constitution and CAMA, particularly Sections 833 and 834. These violations led to the cancellation of all existing claims to leadership, trusteeship, and management within the council.

To manage the council, the CAC has set up an Interim Management Committee (IMC) for one year, effective October 6, 2025. The IMC will oversee and manage NYCN’s affairs during this period.

The Ministry of Youth Development, which supervises the council, confirmed the CAC’s legal authority and pledged to fully cooperate with the IMC to restore unity, legitimacy, and institutional integrity to the NYCN.

Esan also called on all stakeholders, youth organizations, and partners to support the restructuring process, which aims to reposition the council in line with its founding principles.
