FCT police redeploy DPO after viral video of assault on civilian

By Sarah NEGEDU

Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, CP Miller Dantawaye, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer in Ushafa, following a viral video showing him slapping a young man.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, sparked outrage after the footage circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), prompting disciplinary action by the commissioner.

In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner strongly condemned the officer’s behaviour, describing it as unprofessional and contrary to the ethics of the Force.

“The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers,” the Command said in a statement issued in Abuja. “He emphasizes that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under his leadership. Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation.”

Dantawaye, who described the conduct as a serious breach of ethics, said administrative disciplinary steps have already been initiated against the officer. He also cautioned other Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to maintain professionalism, courtesy, and restraint in dealing with the public.

“He warns that any act of misconduct or abuse of power will attract severe sanctions,” the statement added.

The Commissioner urged residents to remain law-abiding and respectful in their engagements with police personnel, stressing that “mutual respect and cooperation are essential for effective community policing and public safety.”

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities or misconduct through the Command’s emergency lines: 08061581938, 08032003913, or the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on 08107314192.
