UniAbuja law students to honour  Femi Falana

The University of Abuja, UniAbuja, chapter of Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, LAWSAN, has finalized arrangements to honour legal icon, Femi Falana, SAN, as one of the country’s most consistent defenders of human rights. 

While describing Falana’s contribution to human rights and democracy as immeasurable, the students announced that the award ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 13, in Abuja.

A statement  issued by the  association’s President, Muhammed Akingbolu, said the event is designed to celebrate the sacrifices and contributions of Mr. Falana to Nigeria’s democracy, the legal profession, and the society at large. 

According to the students, the award is organised as part events marking the Faculty’s Beginning of Legal Year, during which the former President of the West African Bar Association, WABA, will deliver a keynote address. 

“From all the records available, both offline and online, Mr. Femi Falana has consistently stood as a defender of truth, justice and equity. His contributions are immeasurable because he was there for generation before us and he is still there for our generation now. 

“In fact, the credit of the democracy we are currently enjoying should be given to Mr. Femi Falana and his contemporaries and leaders like Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Alfred Rewane,  Beko Ransome Kuti, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Kunle Ajibade, Shehu Sanni and others,” Akingbolu said.

The statement also indicated that the event would  also give students the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills in  law, such as moot court, debate, quiz, and essay competitions.

He said the event would  provide an opportunity for law students to interact with and also  learn from the legal icon , who had  handled several landmark cases successfully,  in various courts of competent jurisdictions. 

“The highlight of the event is a special honour to be conferred on Mr. Femi Falana as Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM) for his sacrifice, struggle, and contributions to body of justice in Nigeria.  

The student leader also expressed his appreciation to the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Mr. Uwakwe Abugu and the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mathew Adamu for their support and guidance to the students and staff of the Faculty.
