The U.S. state of Georgia has proclaimed the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, an honorary citizen.
The proclamation was disclosed on Friday by Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Nnamdi Kanu, who shared a copy of the letter conferring the honour.
Kanu is currently in custody in Nigeria following his conviction on treason-related charges by the Federal High Court. He has rejected the judgment and vowed to challenge it on appeal.
The letter, signed by Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, stated: “I, Brad Raffensperger, Secretary of State of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim Nnamdi Okwu Kanu as an Honorary Georgia Citizen.”
It added that Kanu should be “afforded every courtesy as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia” in his travels within the United States and beyond.
The proclamation was dated January 16, 2026, and issued at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.
According to the disclosure, the letter was received by former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu.
Kanu leads IPOB, a separatist movement seeking the creation of an independent Biafra state in Nigeria’s South-East region.
