Security alert: Police postpone NLC solidarity rally in Abuja

By Sarah NEGEDU
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has advised the FCT Council of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to postpone its planned solidarity protest, warning of credible security threats that could endanger participants and residents.
The march, expected to draw over 66,000 workers from across affiliate unions in support of striking FCTA staff, had been billed for Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, as a major show of force aimed at urging the administration to address lingering labour demands.
But in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, cited intelligence reports indicating plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest.
While stating its respects to constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and committed to providing adequate security for all lawful activities, the Command disclosed that, “intelligence reports at the disposal of the Police indicate plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest for purposes inimical to public peace and security.
“In view of the above, and in the overriding interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command respectfully appeals to the organizers of the planned protest to consider rescheduling the activity to a later date and time.”
The police explained that the measure is aimed at forestalling any breakdown of law and order while ensuring the rights of other residents to safety, freedom of movement, and the conduct of lawful daily activities are not infringed upon.
The Command further assured residents of the FCT of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, calling on citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the collective effort to maintain peace.
