FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, announced plans to forge a broad governing alliance with the newly elected Area Council chairmen, declaring that the incoming leadership will operate as a “rainbow coalition” united behind service delivery across the territory.
The chairmen elect were in the minister’s office on Wednesday to present their certificates of return ahead of their June swearing-in ceremony.
While congratulating them on their victory, the minister used the opportunity to outline expectations for cooperation and performance, warning that their mandate must translate into visible governance for residents.
“On behalf of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, I congratulate the brand new chairmen of the Area Councils. By the grace of God, you have worked hard and emerged victorious, and we thank God for the opportunity given to you to serve,” he said.
Wike said progress in the FCT depends on collaboration, not party lines.
“No matter the party, what is important is that we work together. Since I came as minister, we have always worked together in the city, and that is why we have continued to achieve results,” he added.
He also noted that the administration backed candidates who aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the elections.
“Candidates who supported Mr. President received our support, and we thank God they emerged victorious. Even those from other parties who support the President will be part of what we call a rainbow coalition in the FCT,” he said.
Wike told the incoming chairmen to brace for the demands of office, promising the FCTA’s support once they take over.
“By the time you are sworn in, we will begin to work together to move the councils forward. The support given to you by Mr. President means you must reciprocate by giving good governance to the people,” he said.
He also extended his congratulations to the outgoing council leaders.
