As residents of the Federal Capital Territory join the rest of the world to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has called on Muslim faithful to renew their commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship.
In a Sallah message personally signed by him, Wike described the festival as a time for reflection on faith, reflection, spiritual rejuvenation, and moral renewal, urging residents to carry the values of Ramadan into their daily lives.
He said the season provides an opportunity for citizens to strengthen bonds with their neighbours, support development initiatives, and uphold the law, noting that the harmony of the FCT depends on shared commitment to peace.
“The sacred month of Ramadan has been a period of spiritual rejuvenation, self-reflection, and renewal. As we celebrate Eid Fitr – the culmination of the Ramadan fast, I urge you all to carry forward the values of compassion, forgiveness, and unity that Ramadan embodies,” he said.
He added that the occasion provides a unique moment for collective prayers for Nigeria’s peace, stability, and continued progress. “This occasion also offers us a unique opportunity to pray for our leaders, and indeed, our country Nigeria, that we may continue to enjoy peace and progress.
“Within the FCT, it is reassuring to see Muslims sharing and caring for fellow Muslims and non-Muslims alike in the last 30 days. Individuals and corporate organisations have, by their conduct during this holy month, demonstrated their commitment and cooperation towards maintaining Abuja’s pride of place as the Centre of Unity, Peace and Harmony in Nigeria,” Wike said.
On public safety, the minister reassured residents that the Administration is working closely with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and orderly celebration. “The security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that residents celebrate and enjoy the occasion in peace, tranquility and orderliness. I therefore enjoin all residents to go about their activities without fear or trepidation,” he said.
Wike also used the occasion to speak on the forthcoming political activities leading to the 2027 general elections, urging citizens and political actors to maintain decorum and civility.
“In the coming weeks, campaigns are expected to begin nationwide ahead of Nigeria’s general elections in 2027. Being the Centre of Government, the Federal Capital Territory would witness a beehive of activities around this period. Be assured that the FCT Administration will continue to provide an environment conducive for the orderly hosting of all political events preceding and relating to the general elections.
“I urge all residents regardless of political affiliation, gender or tribe to take a cue from the Muslim Ummah, and maintain peaceful conduct throughout the year while praying for the FCT, and the nation as a whole at this period.”
The minister also expressed appreciation to the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that his Renewed Hope Agenda has strengthened security and improved the socio-economic fortunes of residents.
“Through his Renewed Hope Agenda, the President has uplifted the socio-economic fortunes of residents of the Federal Capital Territory and bolstered security in the nation’s capital,” he said.
