The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.
The decision was reached on Friday during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, where key electoral preparations and timelines were reviewed.
In a statement by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC said the postponement followed “deliberations” on the exercise and its implications within the broader electoral calendar.
According to the Commission, the voter revalidation exercise, is a crucial process aimed at maintaining a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters.
The Commission the exercise is designed to verify existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the integrity of the voter database.
“The exercise also aims to provide an opportunity for registered voters to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required,” the statement noted.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering credible elections, stressing that its core mandate remains unchanged.
“INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections,” the Commission stated.
