Customs moves to align personnel with new tax regime

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has intensified efforts to prepare its workforce for the implementation of the Federal Government’s new fiscal policies as it unveiled a comprehensive training programme aimed at deepening officers’ understanding of recent tax reforms and strengthening compliance across the Service.

The two-day capacity-building exercise, organised in partnership with the Nigeria Revenue Service, NRS, in Abuja, brought together senior management officials, Comptrollers, Superintendents, and junior officers for intensive sessions on the country’s evolving tax framework.

Representing the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, at the opening ceremony, Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Finance, Administration and Technical Services, Kikelomo Adeola, said the initiative was designed to equip personnel with the knowledge and skills required to effectively operate within the new tax environment.

“As a Service entrusted with a critical role in national revenue generation, we must remain abreast of evolving tax policies and ensure strict compliance with our statutory obligations,” Adeola said.

She explained that the training would enable officers to navigate the new tax regime more effectively while maintaining high standards of professionalism and accountability in revenue administration.

According to her, strengthening the capacity of Customs personnel is essential to ensuring seamless adaptation to ongoing fiscal reforms and sustaining public trust in government institutions.

“Tax compliance is not merely a statutory requirement; it is a reflection of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and national development.

“By investing in the capacity of our personnel, we are positioning the Service to adapt seamlessly to emerging fiscal reforms while sustaining public confidence in our operations,” she added.

Adeola further reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to upholding tax obligations and ensuring that officers remain well informed about developments in tax administration, given Customs’ strategic role in revenue mobilisation.

Speaking during one of the sessions, Assistant Director of Tax at the Nigeria Revenue Service, Victoria Udo, highlighted the importance of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) as a key instrument for personal income tax collection.

She noted that compliance with tax regulations offers benefits beyond meeting legal obligations, including access to tax clearance certificates and other financial opportunities.

Udo encouraged participants to actively engage in discussions and seek clarification on aspects of the new tax laws, stressing that a deeper understanding of the reforms would enhance operational efficiency and improve service delivery.

The training forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government and its revenue agencies to strengthen tax administration, improve compliance, and ensure that public institutions are adequately prepared for the implementation of the country’s ongoing fiscal reforms.
