The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, has praised President Bola Tinubu for instructing Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to ensure the immediate release of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria.
This directive was made public by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who highlighted the President’s commitment to reuniting these young detainees with their families.
In a statement signed by CISLAC’s Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organization expressed its appreciation for the President’s readiness to investigate the circumstances behind these arrests and to hold accountable any security personnel involved in wrongful detentions. CISLAC further urged the President to extend his directive to include other detained protesters, saying that such actions would foster national unity and demonstrate a government open to citizens’ grievances.
Beyond the commendation, CISLAC emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice and policing systems. “To restore hope and stability in our country, we must ensure that only judges with integrity serve on our benches,” CISLAC noted.
The organization argued that judicial reform—particularly addressing corruption within the judiciary s essential to strengthening Nigeria’s rule of law, democracy, and international credibility, especially for investors who seek a transparent justice system.
CISLAC also called for substantial reforms in the police force, focusing on recruitment and deployment practices. The group highlighted ongoing issues with police misconduct, brutality, and corruption, stressing that a transparent and merit-based recruitment system is vital for a responsible and effective police force. CISLAC further suggested improvements in police welfare, training, and retirement benefits, which would contribute to better morale and service delivery.
In addition, CISLAC welcomed President Tinubu’s directive assigning the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to oversee the rehabilitation and safe return of these minors. According to CISLAC, this move reflects the President’s compassionate approach to humanitarian issues.
CISLAC also urged the government to empower the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to engage more actively in educating Nigerians about their civic rights and responsibilities. “An informed and engaged citizenry is crucial for national progress,” the organization stated.
Looking ahead, CISLAC expressed optimism about the President’s earlier pledge to engage in dialogue with Nigerian youth, addressing pressing issues like poverty, corruption, insecurity, and limited opportunities. The organization urged the President to establish concrete structures for this dialogue, emphasizing the importance of surrounding himself with reliable advisors to ensure that the initiative genuinely addresses the causes of youth discontent.
CISLAC concluded by affirming its support for any genuine government reforms aimed at improved governance, urging President Tinubu to continue listening to Nigerians and addressing demands for justice and accountability.
