Ex-FCTA director jailed 24 years for N318m fraud

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has secured the conviction of a retired director of the Federal Capital Territory Administration for diverting N318 million in public funds.

The Director of Public Enlightenment and Education and spokesperson of the Commission, Demola Bakare, who confirmed this in a statement, explained that Garuba Duku, a former Director of Finance and Administration with the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, AMMC, was sentenced by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice James Omotosho sentenced Mr. Duku to 24 years in prison after finding him guilty on six counts of corruption and money laundering.

ICPC investigations revealed that he diverted multiple payments amounting to N318,250,000 into his personal bank account between 2012 and 2013. The funds were later moved to Bureau de Change operators for unauthorized use.

The court ruled that the Commission proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and dismissed the convict’s claim that he handed the money to his superiors due to lack of evidence.

The ICPC said the conviction shows its renewed commitment to ensuring public officers who misuse public funds face justice.
