Several passengers are reportedly injured after a train travelling on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor on Monday derailed near Asham, while it was heading towards Abuja.
Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development.
According to him, emergency measures were immediately activated, and the injured passengers were evacuated to the Idu Train Station in Abuja where they are receiving medical attention.
Opeifa said no deaths had been reported as of the time of filing this report.
“It is confirmed that our Abuja-Kaduna train had an incident at Asham. Passengers were injured while an investigation is ongoing into the exact cause of the incident,” he said.
Video footage circulating online showed the affected train coaches with visible dents and damage, suggesting the force of the impact that led to the derailment.
The NRC boss also disclosed that the corporation has commenced a probe to determine the precise circumstances that caused the accident.
He appealed to passengers and the general public to remain calm as authorities work to establish the cause of the incident and ensure safety on the rail corridor.
