Tinubu orders establishment of southern campus of Nigeria Police Academy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the establishment of a southern campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Monday following a high-level meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and other senior police officials.

Alausa said the initiative aligns with the President’s agenda to strengthen policing capacity and improve national security outcomes.

The minister noted that discussions at the meeting focused on concluding plans to commence academic activities at the proposed southern campus located in Erije, Abeokuta.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Education on Media and Communications, Mr. Ikharo Attah, the move is part of a broader push to reposition the Nigeria Police Force through enhanced education and institutional reform.

The statement quoted Alausa as emphasising that the move underscores the administration’s commitment to upgrading police training institutions and equipping personnel with modern, industry-relevant skills.

“This meeting is in continuation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to reposition the police to deliver on its core mandate and improve security across the country,” the minister said.

He revealed that the National Universities Commission has been directed to expedite resource verification processes to enable the new campus to begin operations.

According to him, the President has set a target for the institution to admit its first batch of students between September and November 2026.

The meeting also examined the capacity of over 42 police colleges nationwide, with plans to convert them into monotechnics to enhance specialised training.

Alausa disclosed that a presidential waiver already exists to facilitate the transition, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

He added that discussions included accrediting selected institutions to offer courses tailored to the operational needs of the police, thereby strengthening workforce capacity in critical areas.

To fast-track implementation, three committees were constituted. The first, chaired by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, will handle resource verification.

The second committee, led by Isyaku Mohammed in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education, will focus on improving capacity in police colleges.

The third committee, responsible for infrastructure and physical development of the southern campus, will be chaired by the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmed, commended the initiative, assuring the police leadership of the ministry’s full support to ensure the timely take-off of the new campus.

In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police stressed the importance of education in addressing institutional challenges.

He noted that the Force is committed to introducing courses that will directly enhance personnel effectiveness and strengthen national security.
