Canada has scored its first goal in a World Cup knockout round!
Stephen Eustáquio scored in the second minute of stoppage time of the second half with a sharp shot in front of the goal in Canada’s round of 32 match against South Africa on Sunday, June 28 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. This made the score 1-0 after a fairly slow match.
Canada is a host country of the 2026 World Cup along with the United States and Mexico.
This is their first time in a knockout round of the global tournament after also appearing in the 1986 and 2022 competitions.
Captain Alphonso Davies and Canada finished in second place in Group B, losing home field advantage.
In group play, they took Bosnia and Herzegovina to a 1-1 draw, beat Qatar 6-0 (powered by a hat trick from Jonathan David) and lost to Switzerland 2-1.
This is the first time the World Cup has a round of 32. The tournament expanded to a record 48 teams this summer, which created the extra knockout round.
