The Abia State Government says the state has recorded significant growth in revenue generation, capital spending and public service delivery, ranking among the top-performing states in the country.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu, who cited the 2026 Budget Report and the Phillips Consulting State Performance Index, said Abia ranked second in aggregate revenue growth and third in Internally Generated Revenue growth nationwide.
He also said the state ranked first in total expenditure growth, capital expenditure growth and personnel expenditure growth, while maintaining relatively low overhead costs.
According to the commissioner, the reports identified Abia as the third-fastest improving state, with a score of 0.67 basis points, behind Enugu and Jigawa.
He attributed the development to what he described as prudent management of public resources, increased revenue mobilisation and expanded investment in capital projects.
Kanu said the administration remained focused on improving the welfare and living conditions of residents rather than simply pursuing favourable rankings.
Meanwhile, the state government announced plans to distribute 3.03 million treated insecticide-treated mosquito nets across the state’s 17 local government areas this September.
The exercise, being carried out through the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme, is expected to cost more than ₦1bn.
The commissioner said it would be the first mass distribution of treated mosquito nets in the state since 2010 and was aimed at reducing malaria infections and related deaths.
On healthcare financing, Kanu disclosed that 270,739 people had so far enrolled in the state’s Community-Based Health Insurance Programme.
He also announced the formal launch of the Ameke Community Scheme on September 16, with 1,000 residents expected to enrol at ₦18,000 per person.
This puts the initial cost of the scheme at ₦18m.
On infrastructure, the government said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation for a 200-metre road extension linking Bende Road to Umuwaya Road and surrounding areas in Umuahia.
The state also plans to reconstruct the road linking First Bank to Keystone Bank to ease traffic around Okpara Avenue.
Kanu said work on the Emede-Ibeku Flood Patrol Project was progressing, with site clearing completed, embankment construction at 90 per cent and drainage excavation and concreting at 80 per cent.
At the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, expansion of ticketing facilities and installation of solar mini-grid carports were said to be 60 per cent complete, with completion expected in December.
The commissioner further disclosed that the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service had transported 560,784 passengers.
Of the figure, 196,950 passengers used the service during the free-ridership period between December 2025 and February 2026, while 303,834 passengers used the subsidised service between March and August 2026.
The state government said the figures reflected continued patronage of its subsidised public transportation programme.
