NNPC hails $800m Ima offshore gas project

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, has hailed the $800 million Final Investment Decision, FID, on the Ima Gas Project, describing the investment as a decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector.

The project, which is the fourth major gas development to reach this milestone under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is located offshore in OMLs 112 and 117, and being developed by indigenous operator AMNI International in partnership with TotalEnergies.

At peak production, Ima is expected to deliver about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, feeding directly into Nigeria LNG Limited’s Train 7 expansion, a project set to lift capacity at the Bonny Island plant from 22 million tonnes per annum to 30 Mtpa.

According to a statement by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPC Limited,  Andy Odeh, the FID follows closely on the heels of Iseni, Ubeta and HI, marking a sustained run of investment decisions enabled by the Presidential Directives of 2024, which introduced fiscal incentives for non-associated gas and streamlined contracting to lower development costs.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the FID as a decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector, crediting the reforms with creating competitive terms and a predictable investment climate for both local and international players.

NNPC Ltd also pointed to the partnership structure behind Ima, pairing an indigenous operator with an international major and domestic financing, as a model it hopes to replicate across future gas projects, describing the collaboration between AMNI, TotalEnergies and Nigeria’s financial sector as a template going forward.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with government, regulators and industry stakeholders to sustain investment momentum, positioning gas as a central pillar in Nigeria’s push for industrialisation, job creation and long-term economic growth.
