AAU lecturer dies in Ekpoma hotel, Police arrest three

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in the Mosco area of the town, with the police arresting three persons in connection with the incident.

The lecturer, who was said to be a member of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died shortly after checking into the hotel on Sunday, October 5, 2026.

The Edo State Police Command said Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, Uwuigbe sent the woman out to buy water, but she returned to find him lying lifeless in the room.

Ikoedem said the hotel owner, manager and the woman had been arrested and were being detained at the command’s headquarters as investigations continued.

She added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mike Aladenika, confirmed Uwuigbe’s death, but stressed that the incident occurred outside the institution.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.

The development has generated shock within the university community, with AAU Online News, a platform that reports developments within the institution, describing the lecturer’s death as “shocking.”

The platform, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, expressed condolences to Uwuigbe’s family, colleagues, students, friends and other members of the university community.

Police authorities have yet to disclose the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death, pending the outcome of investigations and further medical examination.
