NMA calls for judicious of healthcare fund

By Williams ABAH

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has called for the need to track the funds released for health care services in the country.

The president of the association, Professor Innocent Ujah, made the call in Abuja during a press briefing held to flag-off the 2021 Physician week.

Ujah, who was represented at the event by the Chairman, FCT chapter of the NMA, Dr Enema Amodu, also called on the government to pay special attention to health care service delivery.

In his words, “It is pertinent to track the release and use of fund released for healthcare services at the federal, state and local government level. Government should also intensify its efforts in the Public Private Policy initiative”.

Amodu added that the government should also pay attention to the health workers welfare including the commensurate payment, and full implementation of hazard allowance without further delay.

According to him, doing all these will definitely renew confidence, commitment and dedication to delivery of quality healthcare to Nigerian.

He condemned the kidnapping and killing of doctors and other health workers by insurgents in Anambra state, adding that government must do all it can to rescue the kidnapped victims.

He urged government to ensure the security and safety of health workers as well as every other Nigerian, calling on state governments who are still owing doctors salary and allowance to pay so as to prevent further frustration among the workforce.

Also speaking at the event, vice vhairman, NMA FCT, Dr Maureen Umemnwo-Umeakuewu, said the 2021 Annual Physician Week would be commemorated with free medical outreach in all its branches.
