Cholera Outbreak: Nigeria records 91 deaths in 6 months

At least 91 Nigerians were said have died from cholera outbreak between January and July 2022, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has said.

A recent cholera situation report by the agency puts the number of  suspected cases in 30 week at 3,610. The samples collated between January 31 and July 31, 2022, suggest that 31 states across 190 local government areas reported suspected cases in 2022.

The report suggested an 18percent increase in the number of new suspected cases in July, 27–30 Epi week 575, compared to June Epi Week 22–26, 473 weekly reports.

A breakdown of state records shows that Bauchi state recorded 15 cases while Borno 94, Kaduna 1, Kano 30, Katsina 23, Yobe 3, and Zamfara 9, giving a total of 175 suspected cases.

Borno, Bauchi, Kano, and Katsina states account for 93% of the 175 suspected cases reported in week 30.

During the reporting week, only 1 Cholera Rapid Diagnostic Test was conducted. The RDT conducted was from Borno 100% positive.

105 stool culture tests were conducted from Bauchi 6. 17%, Borno 94 0%, Kano 2.0%, Katsina 2. 0%, and Yobe 1 0% positive.

Out of  the cases reported, there were 10 deaths, with a weekly case fatality ratio CFR, however no new state reported cases in week 30.

Cumulatively, the report showed that as of July 31, 2022, a total of 3610 suspected cases, including 91 deaths CFR 2.5%, have been reported from 31 states in 2022 and the suspected cases since the beginning of the year.

Children below the age of 5 years were the most affected age group for both males and females.

All the suspected cases, 49% are males and 51% are females.
