Fire outbreak: FCTA takes campaign to markets

As part of efforts to check the incessant cases of market fire across the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, last week, took its sensitization campaigns to the Karimu Market.

The Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation of the Agency, Mrs Frolence Wenegeame, led a team to the which had suffered several fire outbreaks leading to lost property worth millions of naira.

Addressing business men and women at the market which had suffered several fire outbreaks leading to lost property worth millions of naira, the Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation of FEMA, Mrs Frolence Wenegeame, said the agency has the vision to entrench a culture of public safety and effective citizens participation in emergency Management.

She said preventing fire outbreaks is critical to the survival of businesses and advised them to have fire extinguishers in their various shops as an emergency response.

Wenegeame while advising the traders against keeping petrols, kerosene and other inflammables in their shops to avoid fire, also encouraged them to dispose off garbages properly and avoid setting them on fire within the marked premises.

She said, “Put off all your electric appliances in your shops when close from business. Prevention is better than cure.”

Wenegeame called on the businessmen to inform the agency whenever there this any sign of danger in the market for immediate intervention.

An official of the Fire Service, Superintendent Sarki Abdul-Rahman, also informed them of numerous preventive ways of quenching fire outbreaks.

He advised them to avoid constructing extensions within the marked to avoid congestion.

The secretary of Karimu Market, Emmanuel Onah, who appreciated the FCTA for the sensitization campaign, used the opportunity to appeal to the administration to rebuild the market.

He appealed for the establishment of a Fire Service sub-station to help during emergencies.
