President Tinubu’s AU Charter ratification promotes inclusivity- Bankole

In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR ratified the African Union (AU) Charter on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities.

This historic decision earned the heartfelt praise of Hon. Tolu Bankole, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for PWDs.

The ratification of the AU Charter marked a watershed moment for PWDs in Nigeria, signifying the President’s dedication to improving their conditions. Hon. Bankole commended President Tinubu for his unwavering support and love for PWDs, emphasizing that this act demonstrated a tangible commitment to changing the lives of PWDs in Nigeria for the better.

The AU Charter on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities holds particular significance in the context of Nigeria, where a considerable portion of the population faces disability-related challenges due to various socio-economic factors, including the consequences of war, poverty, diseases, aging, malnutrition, natural disasters, and accidents.

President Tinubu’s decision to ratify the Charter reflects his administration’s pledge to bring about a paradigm shift. It signifies a departure from empty promises and showcases a genuine commitment to socioeconomic and political inclusion for millions of PWDs, including the young, women, and elderly individuals with disabilities.

Nigeria, often referred to as the giant of Africa, has reaffirmed its potential to take a prominent place among nations with visionary leadership. The ratification of the AU Charter reinforces the belief that, with pragmatic and visionary governance, Nigeria can lead in promoting inclusivity.

The Charter comes with obligations that include adopting measures for the full implementation of its provisions, mainstreaming disability in policies, legislation, development plans, programs, and various spheres of life. It ensures that fundamental rights for women, girls, children, youths, and older persons with disabilities are guaranteed, covering aspects such as education, health, employment, political inclusion, and security.

The signing of the instrument of ratification on the AU Charter on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities implies that PWDs in Nigeria can now demand equal opportunities from the government at all levels, rather than relying on charity.

Hon. Tolu Bankole called upon all PWD clusters and stakeholders to support the administration’s renewed commitment to enhancing the lives of Persons With Disabilities in Nigeria. This ratification sets the stage for a brighter future, where PWDs can fully participate in and contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity.
