National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has advised Edo State Governor-Elect, Monday Okpebholo, to focus on delivering impactful leadership and advancing Edo State’s development rather than engaging with the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
During Okpebholo’s visit to the APC national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Ganduje emphasized the importance of forward-thinking governance and urged the new governor to prioritize the party’s progressive agenda.
“The ideals of democracy were upheld, the election was executed, and we are on the winning side,” Ganduje said.
“You should not focus on the previous administration. Look forward, don’t look back, and don’t waste your time fighting the person you took over from.”
Ganduje elaborated that a truly progressive government should leave past grievances aside, committing instead to the people’s welfare through dedicated leadership.
He reminded Okpebholo of the APC’s manifesto, urging him to execute its promises diligently to foster socio-economic development, build alliances with stakeholders, and improve the welfare of the people in Edo.
“Think forward and be an action governor,” Ganduje added, recalling Okpebholo’s dynamic campaign.
“During the campaign, you were an action candidate, and now you are an action governor. We believe in you and in your ability to make Edo proud.”
He further assured the incoming governor of the APC’s support in making Edo a model state, highlighting the party’s commitment to sustaining functional and accessible offices across all levels, from wards to local governments.
Ganduje also introduced the party’s new progressive institute, describing it as the APC’s intellectual wing that will provide training and assistance to local government personnel, equipping them to meet the needs of the people and guide political agendas year-round.
In response, Governor-Elect Monday Okpebholo acknowledged Ganduje’s invaluable support and praised the APC’s commitment to a peaceful election process in Edo State. “It wasn’t an easy one,” Okpebholo admitted. “I know how many times the chairman called me, saying, ‘How are you prepared? I want to be in Edo five days before the election.’ He came to the state, and his impact was felt by all.”
Okpebholo credited the APC’s leadership and the President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a smooth election, noting the relative calm of the process.
“Before now, there was this kind of boast that people would die, but on election day, nobody died. For me, this victory is something we in Edo State rejoice about because a new dawn has come to the Edo people,” he said.
Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the APC’s working committee and extended prayers for their continued prosperity, adding, “A new dawn has risen in Edo, and I intend to deliver the prosperity and peace our people deserve.”
In a separate remark, Okpebholo noted his intent to consult with party leadership before addressing any additional issues, stating, “For me, I don’t know what it is. I’ve not seen any reports. By the time I see that, then I will make a decision. I will also consult our party to know the way forward.”
