Benue killings: We must stop counting our dead, protect living – Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the reported killing of innocent citizens and security personnel in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Obi, in a statement on Sunday on X, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently act against the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

“There are moments when words fail because no words can fully express the pain of losing innocent lives to violence,” Obi said.

He said he had received distressing reports of the latest attack in Ayilamo, adding that his heart went out to the bereaved families and the people of Logo.

“My heart goes out to the families who have once again been forced to bury their loved ones, and to the entire people of Logo. I share in your pain,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor recalled his recent visit to Benue State to sympathise with families devastated by violence in Yelwata.

Obi said his attempt to reach the affected community was disrupted, but added that the experience had strengthened his conviction that Nigerians must not become indifferent to the suffering of others.

“Only days ago, I travelled to Benue to stand with families devastated by violence in Yelwata. Even in that moment of grief, when all that should have mattered was humanity, my attempt to reach the affected community was disrupted,” he said.

“Yet that experience has only strengthened my conviction that we must never become indifferent to the suffering of our people.”

He stressed that every Nigerian life had equal value, regardless of religion, ethnicity or profession.

“Whether the victim is a farmer, a child, a police officer, a soldier, a Christian, a Muslim, or a person of any ethnic group, every Nigerian life has equal value,” Obi said.

“We must stop counting our dead and start protecting our living.”

Obi urged the Federal Government and all security agencies to take urgent steps to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent the recurrence of attacks across the country.

“I call on the Federal Government and all security agencies to urgently act, bring the perpetrators to justice, and, most importantly, prevent these recurring attacks. Nigeria cannot continue on this path,” he said.

He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for comfort for those affected by the killings.
